Whilst MARCO’s hardware has been installed within a huge variety of food packing operations in 43 countries worldwide, this latest project was certainly a first! MARCO was delighted to receive a request from a local UK school to assist with their world record attempt for BBC’s Children in Need!
The challenge? To break the record for producing the world’s largest marshmallow! This provided MARCO’s engineers with the challenge of producing a unique, fit-for-purpose scale with the appropriate accreditations and calibrations to be able to weigh and certify this world record attempt!
The marshmallow itself was masterminded by Year 8 student, Josh and artisan confectionary expert Belinda Clark. The enormous treat was designed in the shape of the famous Pudsey the Bear, known for being the face of the BBC’s Children in Need charity. Children in Need is the flagship charity for the BBC in the UK. Since 1980, it has raised over £1 billion for disadvantaged children and young people, all whilst promoting community engagement across the country.
The massive marshmallow was confirmed at a whopping 93.1kg and the Pudsey the Bear head shape measured over 1 metre across! The appropriate calibrations were performed so that the record could be validated by the Guinness World Records organisation. However, more importantly, the event has raised a significant sum of money so far for a fantastic cause! Since the day-long event a Crowdfunding page has been set up online with the aim of raising as much as possible, all for disadvantaged children across the UK. A bidding page was even set-up to purchase the marshmallow outright!
MARCO is immensely proud to have assisted in a small way and to be involved in local community events such as this. A huge well done to all involved at Berkhamsted School, Belinda Clark, and to Year 8 pupil Josh for organising and implementing such a fun and thoughtful event!
